Matthew 5:13-15 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition [Emphasis mine]
13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
The Bible clearly says that YOU are the salt of the earth and that YOU are the light of the world. Say: I am the salt of the earth. I am the light of the world.
During Roman times, salt was worth it’s weight in gold. Many times the Roman Soldiers were paid in salt. Along with many other uses, salt was used for its preservative qualities…for instance to preserve their meat. There was no such thing as a refrigerator.
People need salt to live. We had a neighbor who got deathly ill. After a trip to the emergency room and many tests, the doctor said he was deficient in salt. Getting his salt levels correct lead to a very healthy life. So, you see you and I need salt to live. You and I as the salt of the earth are called upon to preserve our communities, and the world from moral decay.
Have you ever ordered French fries and when you took your first bite you realized they had forgotten to salt them? Yuk! Have you ever ordered French fries and they tasted like someone put the entire salt shaker in the bag of fries? Salt also makes us thirsty. When you and I allow ourselves to be the salt of the earth, we cause others to thirst for Jesus Christ!
We have hurricanes here in Central Florida. Many time we have lost the power to our home for up to eight days. We have several “hurricane lamps” to light our home at night. Without the “hurricane lamps” and additional candles we’d be in total darkness. Literally, you would be how much light it gives out when there is total darkness! That’s who you and I are in this dark world. You may think, “Well I don’t have a big light to shine.” You don’t need to be a BIG light. The smallest of lights can light up a very large area in total darkness. You may not recognize how “light” you are…how “salty” you are.
I hear the Holy Spirit saying that many of you don’t think that you are very salty or that you are very full of light. It’s not true! You absolutely are making a BIG difference!
Many years ago before cell phones and when light up watch faces were the rage, our electricity randomly went out and I was in our laundry room. Our laundry room had no windows and I was in complete darkness. I thought I need to find my way to the door and then remembered that I had my watch on. I pressed the button to light the face of the watch and I was amazed at how much light it gave to that dark room! I was able to see to get out of the laundry room and get to some candles to light a few rooms until our electricity was restored. I challenge you, go into a room like a laundry room with no windows, turn the light out and close the door. Take your cell phone with you. Once in the darkness turn on your phone (not the flashlight portion) and you will light the entire laundry room. THAT’S WHO YOU ARE! You don’t have to be a flood light. Maybe you are. One thing that’s for sure…any bit of light dispels the darkness and YOU ARE THAT LIGHT!
The devil doesn’t want you to know that YOU are the salt of the earth…that You are the light of the world. My job is to remind you that YOU ARE SALT! YOU ARE LIGHT! AND YOU ARE MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE!
