When I received the picture below on Facebook it brought back a flood of memories.
My husband Eddie and I had been pastoring in 1995 when God called us out from our pastorate into the Evangelistic Field. We kept hearing, “I am sending you out like Abraham and Sarah not knowing where you are going. Each time my husband would mention it, I would say, “Well Abe, when you get there let me know.” I must admit I was extremely resistant! Our children were on the A Honor Roll at school. We had a nice church and salary and so forth. I was, to say the least, very comfortable. I loved my life just like it was.
Most of us have heard that opposites attract. Well Eddie and I are no exception. I am a “planner” by personality. Going anywhere or doing anything without a plan was not my nature. Eddie, on the other hand was a “go with the flow” kind of person. Plan? What plan? So as God has worked on both of us, we now have a plan in pencil with a BIG eraser.
We had a guest speaker at our church, Rev. Clayton Mulvaney. He now resides in heaven. Pastor Mulvaney had my dad in his Sunday School class years previous. Pastor Mulvaney had know both Eddie and me since we were teenagers and he was our Presbyter at the time. We hadn’t told him that we were feeling God’s call to leave the pastorate and go into the evangelistic ministry.
God has such a sense of humor! As Pastor Mulvaney got up to speak, he said, “I had a message all prepared. But as I was sitting here the Holy Spirit is leading me in a different direction. Eddie and Becky are on a pilgrimage. They are like Abraham and Sarah, not knowing where they are going.”
I wanted to scream, “STOP”! Eddie just began laughing because he knew God was bringing yet one more confirmation.
I couldn’t sleep that night, so I got up and decided to read my Bible. I could hardly believe my eyes when my Bible “accidentally” fell open to:
Isaiah 51:1-2 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
51 Hearken to Me, you who follow after rightness and justice, you who seek and inquire of [and require] the Lord [claiming Him by necessity and by right]: look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the hole in the quarry from which you were dug;
2 Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him when he was but one, and I blessed him and made him many.
I began to cry and repent. That was the night I accepted the call to go on the evangelistic field.
We began making preparations. We transitioned a pastor in to take the church over, found home schooling materials, bought a conversion van with a television and video player in it for our two children to do their school and so forth.
Fast-forward to our first Sunday after leaving our church and we realized we forgot to do something VERY IMPORTANT. We forgot to start booking revivals. Ugh. This was a horrible start for this little planner girl.
Needless to say, we did book revivals. God opened doors. We saw very many people healed spiritually, physically, mentally and financially. We saw the “impossible” become possible. People came out of wheelchairs. Cancers gone. Broken hearts mended. It would take an entire book or two just to share what we were honored to see God do! People came to Jesus for the first time. Others rededicating their life to God. To God Be The Glory Great Things He Has Done And Is Doing!”
Unfortunately, many times there was what we call, a lot of love and very little offering. Seriously, we found out about several pastors who stole our offering and kept it for themselves or only gave us a small portion. We didn’t make any requirements of the churches we ministered in except to receive a love offering for us.
Being on the road with a family of four – two of them teenagers is very expensive!
I CONFESS that satan had gotten the best of me. I got so sick of hearing, “Where God guides, He provides.” I would say, “That is not true for us”. That was a BIG MISTAKE! I had aligned myself with the enemy via my CONFESSION, instead of CONFESSING the TRUTH of God’s Word.
Had I known how important my words were back then, I would have been speaking – CONFESSING – the TRUTH of GOD’S WORD…and would have experienced extreme financial blessing. In sharing this story, I hope I spare you from having to learn this lesson the hard way. No Matter what the enemy throws at you…it is a lie. Satan is a liar and all he can do is lie. Instead of aligning myself against God’s Word I should have made my VERBAL CONFESSION, “God has guided us to the evangelistic field and we are fully funded to do His will! God does provide where He guides!”
Isaiah 58:11 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
11 And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought and in dry places and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.
